Do not use automatic submission services. Without control over submissions you can by accident add your link to excluded or banned Google site, otherwise various types of directories which host links to illicit sites.

Avoid link exchange networks. In many cases webmasters post your links before link swap offer and later never remove them.

Avoid SEO services which offer actually cheap price or assure to boost your traffic overnight. At all times check company background.

Try not to put up many links from forums and blog comment fields. The majority of them use “no follow” tag and it is bad symbol to have great amount of links.

Deal just with trusted websites.

It’s also important that you don't involve yourself in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In general, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected badly by those links.
