301 REDIRECT SPAM
301 redirect is a browser based permanent redirect which tells the user that a page or website has permanently moved to a new location and the current location will either disappear or will be removed in a course of time. 301 redirect is the most effective way to tell the search engine that a page or website has moved. There are many other directs like Meta refresh, mouse over, 302 redirect. All the other redirects are telling the search engines or browsers that the move is only temporary.
Permanent redirect is very effective than a temporary redirect. Temporary redirect will make the search engine retain both the redirecting and redirected page. But in the case of a 301 redirect only the redirected page is retained and redirecting page is either dropped off or not valued in search engine rankings. Spammers use this method to their advantage. They register lot of high PageRank websites and redirect them to their website to get the PageRank benefit from those websites. 301 redirect will pass the PageRank of the linking webpage to the linked web page. So all the link benefit is passed on to the spammer's domain. Sometimes the anchor text value also gets passed and this makes the spammer website rank for keywords that are not related to their website. This is because the domain from where this website redirected would have had good back links and keywords that are related to the ranking keyword. Because 301 redirect passes on the link and anchor text benefit the linked site gets huge boost. This is not done just with domains but also with individual pages. Some high ranking pages are hacked and redirected to the spammer's domain which results in good back link power to the spammer website.
301 redirect spam has come down with the advancement of search engines. PageRank of expired domains are devalued and most of the expired domains have to rebuild their links which makes 301 redirect ineffective.
