Paid reviews are part of the web. It has been into existence ever since the internet started. People are paid to review websites, products, articles, blog contents, Businesses etc. Most of the time people are paid to write positive reviews and there is nothing wrong about this.
But today paid reviews are becoming a part of Search Engine manipulation strategy. Where ever there is money involved there might be some manipulation.
Here bloggers, article writers other website owners are paid money to review other websites or products. They just don't stop with reviewing; site owners who want their site reviewed just don't stop with it but they want a text backlink to their website.
It is similar to buying links to your website. You buy links from other sites without nofollow or redirect links; you get your site reviewed and get a link from the review itself.
If the reviews are coming from popular blogs or news sites it will affect the search engine algorithm since the algorithm deeply depends on links for quality sites. There are few free sites that allow reviews and even allow use of html. This helps some search engine manipulators to just add few links of review and get backlinks to their site. Also there are few sites like sponsoredreviews.com which openly promote link based reviews. Right on their homepage they claim to give free backlinks for bought review. This is open Search Engine manipulation. Search engine algorithm which depends heavily on links is damaged by this type of link buying spam. Paid reviews are exploited by certain companies by making them look like link buying.
