Domain farming is similar to link farming where you register 100s of domains for the primary purpose of manipulating search engine results and search engine rankings. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to register 100s of domains to sell their product. Having one website and promoting them, is the best way to sell 1000s of products. If your affiliates wants to create websites and promote your products let them do it but when you are selling your products it is better to sell with one good website.
Imagine Amazon, they just have one website that everyone uses. There are cases where a big company might need to have country specific domains to promote their product. For that they should have something unique for their users. EBay has a website for most of the leading countries and they are happy running their websites and even search engines are. It's because they have the power and resource to make all their sites unique.
People like these, mostly get caught by the search engines and will get banned. They cannot hide the huge number of sites they run even after best efforts. They might have same contact details across different websites, same WHOIS data / registrar, same IP address, same Google webmaster tools account and sometimes hosted on same server as well. Google's webmaster guidelines target this particular method specifically
In domain farming, it's not the case in which some merchants want to have many websites, each selling a particular product or particular category or different services. These people who start those websites will not have enough resources to promote market and make each websites unique. So they will just cross link all the websites to gain popularity, add duplicate contents across websites etc. This is not good for users and search engines.
