THREE WAY LINKS
Three way linking, is a new way to spam the Search engine industry. It's a clever way of deceiving the search engines thinking that actually the links are not reciprocal but are one way links. What they do is, send a link request asking to link to a website which will be either their website or their client website and in exchange they will be willing to give a link from directory or some MFA site or some other site just created for 3 way links. Most of these sites which pretend to use for 3 way linking have some PageRank which comes from just one or two backlinks that the site has. This tactic is one of the major tactics to tackle the search engines war against reciprocal links.
Search engines found all possible ways to detect and devalue reciprocal links. To avoid this they use this 3 way link strategy. Most of these 3 way link building is outsourced to 3rd world countries. It's a big cottage industry there and there are just too many people involved in this.
This is a big problem for search engines they need to tackle this menace and they are doing it effectively.

The image below shows a 3 way link exchange between three sites search.com, sengine.com and penguinupdates12.com. It is observed from the image that, sengine.com receives a link from search.com and it in turn links to penguinupdates12.com thus establishing a three way link structure.

You can keep track of three way, four way or multiple link exchange campaigns. A three way link exchange would look like this:
• domainA.com links to domainB.com
• domainB.com links to domainD.com
A three way link exchange would look like this:

An Example 3 Way Link Technique:
