BUYING TEXT LINKS
There are so many different opinions on buying text links. In my opinion buying links stands on top on the table of 100 Search Engine Manipulations.
Buying links on other sites has been in existence from the day internet started. It is just another sort of advertisement. But from the day search engines started depending upon Backlinks to rank a website; text link becomes the biggest danger. Why?
If you buy links that pass PageRank you are destroying the way the web works. Internet is a collection of interconnected websites mostly linked together by interests.
People like to link to each other because they like those sites. Search Engines like Google, writes an algorithm based on this assumption, but what happens is, people start buying links that pass PageRank and the core algorithm of the search engine gets affected. Websites start to get interconnected to impress search engines not to impress other webmasters or site owners.
Imagine a website that has lot of information about apples and has been consistently ranking in top 5 in Google for more than 5 years, then a webmaster who sells apples all over USA starts a website goes and buy text links on big sites and end up beating the great information website. Does it add any value to its visitors? This is typical manipulation with the greatest power you have that is money. So this means money can do everything and the real quality sites get beaten because of the big money guys.
Buying text links that pass PageRank gives a lot of power to the big money guys, more money you have bigger and high PageRank sites you advertise and better your rankings are. Smaller guys who run great information sites but cannot spend money need to stay behind the big money guys. Search Engines definitely want the website which has lot of information on apples to be on top than the commercial site that sells apple throughout USA. This is because 85% people who use search engines are regular users who search for information and not to buy products. Google has strong protection algorithm that can detect paid links and devalue them and in rare cases even penalize the sites that sell / buy links.
Buying text links for search engine ranking boost destroys the natural quality of internet. I rate this as the No.1 of all search engine manipulations. Lots of people can have different ideas but for me, I see from search engine and search quality engineer's point of view.
