What is a widget?
A web widget is a stand-alone application that can be embedded into a third party's website by any user on a page. Widgets can be installed and executed by the end user of a website. Widgets allow users to turn personal content into dynamic web apps that can be shared on websites where the code can be installed.
Spam widget as described by a senior search engine employee, is the method of getting links from a widget to sites that are completely unrelated to the site and also getting links from widgets to other sites by sponsoring the widgets. Search engine spammers have been using this tactic effectively. They approach a widget provider and pay them money to link to their own sites. Another method is where SEOs will approach widget providers and ask them to link to their client sites for a small monthly or yearly payment. This is a common strategy happening these days across the widget industry. Matt Cutts, senior Google search quality engineer, has described this as a widget spam which doesn't come under the white hat SEO category. He said, "Widget links are fine as long as they are relevant to the site and not used to abuse the search engines."
We agree with the point of Search Engines that this is a search engine manipulation tactic because it hurts the core algorithm of search engines like Google which depends so much on PageRank to rank a website. Widget attracts lots of people and can be used as an easy way to link to any site, the widget owner wants.
