One way links is the practice of having backlinks from website / webpage without linking back to the originating site. For long time search engines and users consider this as a valid method to rank a website. There are good, bad and ugly one way links, which is the problem search engines have to face. Worst search engine manipulation happens in one way links.
Buying text links, discussed in detail in a previous post, is a worst case example of one way manipulating links. Anyone with money can easily influence search engine results, just by buying few 1000 backlinks to their site. Due to the popularity of one way links people find innovative ways to abuse its power. What we call 4 way link exchanges, acts like one way links to a website. A link builder will send you a request to add his link to any of your website and will return by linking to any site you want from any of the sites you own. They might have some nice green on Google toolbar like PageRank 4 or 5 which will lure the site owner to provide the links.
Google's recent Feb 24th 2011 update killed many content blogs that never had any value than to make the linking site get some link power. By killing the blogs they also killed a lot of backlink power the main sites used to gain from them. This was a main strategy of many SEO companies. They setup small websites and blogs and keep adding regular contents to them and finally they end up adding their client websites to gain link popularity from these content sites / blogs. Now it's not working anymore. This update affected more than 11% of websites and search results.
Hackers and cyber criminals are well aware of the power of one way links. So they go to extreme steps to hack a server and inject their code into websites on that server. The code will be encrypted code with hidden links to either the hacker's websites or to places he has posted spam backlinks.
