One such abuse is the Wordpress footer link selling. When someone develops a theme they allow it to be given out for free since they don't get any favor out of it they sell links to site owners from the footer of Wordpress blogs. This becomes easier when the themes itself comes with embedded footer links of sites which buy links from the Wordpress themes website. Website owners, SEO companies and link brokers, approach sites that offer Wordpress themes and offer them money to add their client sites or their own websites to the footer of the themes they are allowing to download. This has become a big market and there are companies that provide dedicated footer link buying service.
This type of spamming is similar to buying text links to boost your search engine ranking and PageRank. Since some themes are very popular and used across thousands of sites, when you embed your links before the themes being downloaded you can easily gain 1000s of backlinks within days. Sometimes this can be un-intentional. Wordpress vulnerability in previous versions allowed an link injection attack on footer and header, where a hacker can get into your site and add his links. You might get penalized for this, if you don't detect it early. In most cases the links are not visible on the web page unless you view the source code of the document.
We should avoid buying Wordpress footer links even if you can get away with it, because in the long term it will hurt your site and it will give an unfair advantage over your competitors by the power of money over real hard work.
