SEO contests were originated in the year 2004. Some SEOs started to play with search engines by trying to rank phrase on top of Google results. The site that ranks on top of Google SERPs will get the 1st prize. Prizes were announced based on the participation and competition of the tournament. Search engines find SEO contest controversial and against their guidelines because it usually leads to lot of link spamming and aggressive link campaigns. Some contests have strict guidelines for the contests to be white hat, but the debate of what is white hat still remains. Search engine optimizers use all the tactics in book to reach the top since some of the prizes offered were attractive and some of them were pretty costly. The nigritude ultramarine contest is considered as the mother of all contests according to Wikipedia.
Wikipedia was right! Because I haven't heard of any SEO contests before that was popular. Nigritude ultramarine was the keyword asked to rank in Google top 3. All top 3 sites will win prize and the event was organized by Dark Blue and Search Guild forums.
After the original Nigritude ultramarine contest, lots of contests have gone by. Search engine optimizers used Google to play with sites and used Google as a ranking machine to rank sites that are of no value to their users. Every time a contest comes up, it becomes a trouble for search engines because almost all the sites use gibberish keywords and phrases which don't add anything to Google's search index.
Already established sites are not allowed to participate because it gives them a big advantage over new websites. Many Search engine optimizers resorted to spam and aggressive search engine optimization tactics to rank their website. SEO contest are a menace to the search engines and SEO contests are one of the biggest manipulations of search engine algorithms.
