Blogs were the find of the 21stcentury it gave the opportunity for copy writers to write their personal experience or professional experience without the standard writing rules. Because of this blogs became very people with search engines. Every search engine out there liked blogs because of their unique and interesting information. Blogs started gaining lot of backlinks because of the information they have. Also most of the bloggers are part of some community and they tend to link with each other. If you are regular to blogs you would have easily come across blogs which has over 100 links to other blogs. Community blogging lead to commercialization. People started exploiting the power of blogs using various methods.
Some blogs were abandoned by their users and they get expired. Expired blogs were captured by search engine manipulators and they add their own links or client site links in those blogs. Also they frequently update those blogs with junk article information that was in no way the same quality the original blog possessed. I know a SEO company who do this commercially. They have a bunch of low paid people who are asked to keep the captured blogs active. Every day when the person who maintains the blog comes they need to post at least one content in the blog. Some of the employees are asked to maintain up to 50 blogs per day. Those people who were assigned to maintain these blogs don't even have proper English knowledge. They both visit Wikipedia or some news site copy news content and post it to the blog to keep the blog active. No one reads these blogs except the search engines. Because these blogs had a lot of back links themselves the content updates made Google think these blogs are genuine. I came across a blog which had over 40,000 back links. But when I read the articles on that blog they were totally gibberish. No way would this blog have gained 40,000 BLs with such low quality contents. There is a small cottage industry which evolves in maintaining low quality blogs just for back links. Again search engines now see quality authoritative contents so I assume these junk blog updates won't work anymore with major search engines. Nevertheless this is a major search engine manipulation which is done by many SEO companies as part of their back link portfolio.
