GOOGLE GROUP SPAM
"Google groups" is a message board from Google that enables users to interact between themselves. Topics discussed range from information related to Google to generic topics. "Google groups" are one of the leading message boards these days. "Google groups" is the only place where you can see Google employees directly interacting with people, who have questions regarding Google products and services. Google employees communicate to end users through blogging; forums etc. Google groups is very useful since many users like using it and people like interacting with Google directly and this is the only most effective platform.
"Google groups" is a popular place for search engine spamming because it sits under a powerful Google.com domain. Google groups' homepage itself is a PageRank 8 a clear indication that it is popular. Sometimes Google uses nofollow and other times they don't use it.
Before few years Google groups was not actively moderated and spammers took advantage and posted spam with their links embedded in the content they post. Some spammers will directly link from Groups or just link to a page where they have tons of spam links to their sites.
Before when these things started there was no report this message link and virtually it was impossible to report a spam post without emailing Google. Even now users find it difficult to report since it's not visible to users directly. We have to click more options on the top right corner of the post and then click report a message.

Also it's not just spam posts, where anyone can start a separate group with Google groups and there are 100s of spam groups that are old and (that) still exist in Google groups.

Above group still exists in Google even after it was posted many years back.
Spammers use mass mailing to spam people with the Google groups links so that their real site is not banned for email SPAM. A good link without nofollow from Google Groups, helps and SEO spammers are aware of this and Google groups spam to the core.
