Similar to unrelated keywords spamming, the search engines with keyword misspellings proved to be effective and highly manipulative. There are some SEO companies who recommend people to stuff pages with misspellings because it helps with search engines. People are bound to make spelling errors when they do a search. When search engines find a web page where the searched misspelling is found they will return that result.
There are people out there who want to take advantage of this Search engine's weakness and use misspelled words to attract traffic to their site. Even big companies have used this as part of their SEO strategy. This was popular for over 10 years since SEO came into existence. Nowadays search engines are well aware of this strategy and if they find excessive misspellings they will penalize the website.
To show an example of keyword misspellings, type in "garmiin" this is a misspelled word of the famous GPS manufacturer Garmin. Google will automatically correct your results to Garmin if you type in "Garmiin". On the top of the page Google will display this "Showing results for garmin. Search instead for garmiin"
You click on the garmiin link and when you scroll down the results you will see some sites which use misspelled words on the page and when you click on the link you will be redirected to a different page. As I write this post I see about 4 sites out of top 12 results all using keyword misspelling and cloaking. We can see Cloaking and misspelling still exists but Google is fighting back strongly with Google suggest and automated spelling correction. Similarly other top search engines like Bing and Yahoo both use auto-correct to help users find the right results.
